Thailand — Laos

Happy holidays from this happy traveler! Although this season I’ve missed my friends and family, the warm fuzzies, winter lights and snow back at home, the past couple of weeks have been filled with heart-warming connections that have kept my holiday spirit alive. It’s been just over a month since I left Oregon and I’ve... Continue Reading →

Thai Islands

I'm sitting on some floor cushions in a hostel called "The Moment," drinking free coffee and finally taking "a moment" (cringing, that's a cheesy one) to write an update. Here's what I've been up to over the last week-ish.

Day 1 – Bangkok, Thailand

About a month ago I bought my first one-way ticket. This will be the longest solo travel I've ever done. With no set plan or timeline, I'm thinking I'll be exploring for the next year or so.

Adapting

July 19th, 2017 Im sitting in a tro-tro commuting to my first Pro-link internship day out in the field. I'm going to a side of Accra that's totally new to me. Although I've been in this city for nearly 4 weeks now, with just one weekend venture out of town (to Cape Coast), this urban... Continue Reading →

Ashanti Region

July 21-23, 2017 Photos from Kumasi: Learned about Adinkra Symbols and the stages of ink processing. They are often used in funeral contexts and represent the spirit of the departed person. Now they are used a little more freely as a form of self-expression. I made two prints. Palace visit: Kumasi Central Market: I was... Continue Reading →

Weekend at Cape Coast

July 14-16, 2017 Friday:  Left Accra. First stop: Korfu village school library visit. Couldn't help but feel a little odd stepping in and taking photos of all this kids who wanted to touch us. Thoughts of voluntourism were swirling in my head. But we were simply visiting, which I think is harmless exposure. There was... Continue Reading →

The USA Fascination

July 10th, 2017 The value placed on American anything is out of proportion. From what I've observed and learned through conversation is that often, things here that claim "American standard," "USA grade," or even have a white person involved is given greater credibility. This is a problem. Perhaps this is an idea rooted in western... Continue Reading →

6/24/17 I'm sitting here at a beach restaurant in Accra playing cards and a Ghanaian board game and watching a group of local men kick around in a sandy football game. It feels so cool that this is so normal, and this is life for the next 6 weeks.

Ghana: Night One

On my first official night in Ghana we danced to funk and drums under a thunderstorm after a plateful of plantains and chicken and I was a happy happy girl.
