The Swiss Chalet

Sat-Sun, written PM of 25 Feb, 2017

Today I spent the day hiking (snowshoes in hand, the sun scared away the powder we’d prepared to face) and cabin-resting with 40/50 year old Swiss folk, friends of my host mama. Spending a 9 hour evening of aperitif, raclette (my childhood dream of a meal. This is a brûléed cheese wheel scraped onto a plate of your selection of potatoes, pickles, paprika, etc.), dessert, and card games was a Swiss experience to say the least. We shared huge laughs over jokes and situations that I independently wouldn’t have even found that funny, but the group joy was infectious and a beautiful thing. My cheeks are sore for smiling! We closed the eating and switched to drinking, beginning with a question posing game where you ask questions off of cards (all written in french) and guess what the askee’s answer will be (oui, non, or ce dépend). Moving on we played a Swiss drinking game, counting off numbers around the circle, saying “buzza” whenever we reached a multiple of, or a number that included, 7 (i.e. 7, 14, 17, 21, 27, 28). Anytime we messed up we passed the grolle (see photos below for Saturday) of spiked orange coffee and took a drink. We did the whole thing in french, which was awesome practice for fast french numbers. But I had trouble with dix-sept, getting caught by number 17 three times. Our final game was the Suisse equivalent of catch phrase, this one titled “Times Up!” Although a challenging night at times, the group speaking almost entirely in french and being of a very different age demographic, I felt well integrated and happy with a lazy weekend in the woods.

The photos loaded backwards again, but check them out! I suggest from bottom to top.

Not a bad place to write an 8-page essay

On the way to the chalet! (peep the rhyme, “chalet” has a soft “t”)
